How To Create A Health Fitness and Nutrition Plan That WORKS

As we head into the new year, fitness and nutrition are undoubtably on a lot of people’s minds. Whether you resolve to lose weight, get into better shape, optimize health, train for a race or competition, or anything in between, the first step is creating a nutrition and exercise plan. This can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start. It’s important to create a fitness and nutrition plan that is clear, realistic, achievable – and sustainable in the long term.

Fortunately, we’ve got this handy guide to get you started!

Step 1: Identify Your Goals

The first step to creating a fitness and nutrition plan is to identify your goals. Be specific! Do you want to eat healthier? Do you want to lose 20 lbs.? Do you want to run a 5k? Do you want to increase energy? Write out your goals and be as clear as possible. The clearer you are the more effective your plan will be.

Step 2: List Out Resources Required to Reach Your Goal

The second step to creating a fitness and nutrition plan is to compile a list of what you will need to reach your goals. What are the possible routes to your goals? What resources and support can you utilize to help you achieve your goals as efficiently and safely as possible? It’s important to remain flexible while working towards your goals. It is also important to have the right knowledge and support. We recommend consulting with professionals in the field, including fitness and nutrition coaches. Whether in-person or virtual, a fitness and nutrition coach can help you create a plan suited to your unique goals and needs.

Step 3: Create Specific & Realistic Action Steps

The third step to creating a fitness and nutrition plan is to review your goals and break them down into smaller goals. Remember to be specific and realistic. If your goal is to lose a certain amount of weight, break your goal up into weekly and monthly weight loss goals. Include an action plan of what you will do to accomplish this, like attending group fitness classes and enrolling in a nutrition program with meal prep options. By breaking your goal down it allows you to get specific on your action plan, while also helping you prioritize tasks and deadlines. It also allows you to celebrate smaller milestones along the way, which is a great way to keep positive momentum going and stay motivated.

Step 4: Start Your Journey!

As you embark on step 4, which marks the start of your journey, we recommend a few things to keep you on track:

  • Have visual reminders of your goal and milestones

  • Read and/or watch motivational content

  • Keep track of your progress

  • Add milestone dates to a calendar with notifications

  • Review your plan daily and refine it weekly, make changes if needed to better support your progress

  • Surround yourself with a supportive community

  • Stay positive, patient, and consistent

  • Get an accountability partner
